Things to do in Alba Iulia
Our house stands 600 metres from the Alba Carolina Citadel — roughly an eight-minute walk. Here is what our reception team at La Maison de Caroline recommends you do not miss.
A few steps from the house
Inside the Alba Carolina Citadel
Alba Carolina Citadel
A star-shaped bastion fortress built between 1715 and 1738 in the Vauban style. The paths between its walls are easy to explore on foot, in every season.
The Third Gate
The most spectacular of the citadel’s gates, adorned with statues and bas-reliefs. Above it survives the room where Horea, leader of the 1784 peasant uprising, was held prisoner.
St Michael’s Roman Catholic Cathedral
One of the finest medieval monuments in Romania, built in the 12th and 13th centuries. It holds the tomb of John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara).
The Coronation Cathedral
Built between 1921 and 1922 for the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie of Romania, on 15 October 1922.
The Union Hall and the National Museum of the Union
It was in the Union Hall, on 1 December 1918, that the union of Transylvania with Romania was voted. The museum nearby holds collections from Roman times to the Great Union.
The Three Fortifications Route
A walk linking the remains of the Roman fort of Apulum, the medieval citadel and the Vauban fortress — three eras in a single stroll.
In the warmer months, the Citadel also hosts the changing of the guard; the schedule is announced by the organisers. At reception, we will gladly tell you which events are taking place during your stay.
